Christian LAGARDE

1952-2019

Christian Lagarde obtained his doctorate in economics from the University of Paris X Nanterre in 1986 on a subject that has always fascinated him: "The law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall", under the supervision of Professor Jacques Valier. He was recruited to the University of Montpellier 1, and was appointed to the rank of Associate Professor on January 1, 1988. Christian Lagarde took his teaching mission to heart, and his students were particularly fond of him. They remember the legendary first-year course he taught for many years in the Faculty of Economics, and the epistemology course for the Doctoral School of Economics and Management he was to give again this year. Christian Lagarde's academic career has also been marked by a very high level of commitment to the Faculty of Economics, as well as to the University. His rigor, political acumen and detailed knowledge of the workings of higher education establishments enabled him to carry out all the missions entrusted to him with great efficiency. Director of the UFR d'Économie for ten years, from 2004 to 2014, during his two mandates he profoundly modernized the organization and management of the UFR, and put in place genuine management of the training offer. He also created and directed two particularly attractive university degrees, and strongly developed international partnerships by setting up double degrees (with the Externado University of Colombia, the University of Valparaiso and the University of San Louis de Potosi). Christian Lagarde was just as active and committed at university level. From 2009 to 2014, he was vice-president in charge of general and statutory affairs at Université Montpellier 1, before being reappointed to his current position at the University of Montpellier. He was responsible for a wide range of missions, including ensuring the legal security of procedures, providing political support for the quality approach and overseeing the deployment of management tools. Since its creation in 2009, he has also been heavily involved in the "Université de Montpellier Entreprendre" University Foundation, first as Vice-Chairman and then as Chairman. In addition to his mandates within the University, Christian Lagarde assumed numerous responsibilities outside our establishment. He was President of Crédit Mutuel Enseignant Languedoc-Roussillon since its creation in February 2012. Since December 2012, he has also chaired the Conférence des doyens des Facultés de sciences économiques et de gestion (Conference of Deans of Faculties of Economics and Management); in this capacity, he has been a member of the Licence, Master, PhD monitoring committee since its creation. A member of the Board of Directors of the Montpellier Confucius Institute since September 2013, he became Chairman in November 2015.
