Christian LAGARDE

1952–2019

Christian Lagarde obtained his PhD in economics from Paris X Nanterre University in 1986 on a subject that has always fascinated him: "The law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall," under the supervision of Professor Jacques Valier. He was recruited by Montpellier 1 University and became a tenured associate professor on January 1, 1988. Christian Lagarde took his teaching mission to heart and was particularly appreciated by his students. They remember the legendary first-year course he taught for many years at the Faculty of Economics, as well as the epistemology course at the Doctoral School of Economics and Management, which he was due to teach again this year. Christian Lagarde's academic career was also marked by a very high level of involvement in the Faculty of Economics, as well as in the University. His rigor, political acumen, and detailed knowledge of the workings of higher education institutions enabled him to carry out all the tasks entrusted to him with great efficiency. As director of the Economics Department for ten years, from 2004 to 2014, he profoundly modernized the organization and management of the department during his two terms and implemented a comprehensive strategy for the curriculum. He also created and directed two particularly attractive university degrees and significantly developed international partnerships by setting up dual degrees (Externado University of Colombia, University of Valparaiso, and University of San Luis de Potosí). Christian Lagarde was equally active and committed at the university level. As Vice President for General and Statutory Affairs at Montpellier 1 University from 2009 to 2014, then reappointed to his position at Montpellier University, he carried out numerous tasks such as ensuring the legal security of procedures, promoting the quality approach politically, and overseeing the deployment of management tools. Since its creation in 2009, he has also been heavily involved in the "Université de Montpellier Entreprendre" University Foundation, first as Vice President and then as President. In addition to his roles at the university, Christian Lagarde held numerous positions outside our institution. He had been President of Crédit Mutuel Enseignant Languedoc-Roussillon since its creation in February 2012. Since December 2012, he had also been President of the Conference of Deans of Faculties of Economics and Management; in this capacity, he had been a member of the Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD Monitoring Committee since its creation. A member of the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute in Montpellier since September 2013, he became its President in November 2015.
